FAA Airframe Weight and Balance Practice Test

The term "CG range" refers specifically to the range of positions where the center of gravity (CG) must remain for the safe operation of the aircraft. This is a critical aspect of weight and balance calculations because the location of the CG affects the aircraft's stability and control characteristics. If the CG is outside this range, it can lead to compromised handling qualities, which may make the aircraft difficult to control or even unsafe to operate.

The CG range is determined during the aircraft design process and is defined within the aircraft's operating limits. Pilots and maintenance personnel need to ensure that the load (including passengers, cargo, and fuel) is distributed in such a way that the CG stays within this predefined range throughout the flight. This is essential for maintaining the correct aerodynamic properties and ensuring that the aircraft performs as intended.

In contrast, other choices do not accurately define "CG range." For instance, the distance an aircraft can travel before takeoff is more about operational range; the maximum weight relates to structural integrity; and the altitude range pertains to flight operation limits, none of which pertain directly to the significance of the center of gravity's position.
